Concrete Concrete for me thru the years has been quite a learning experience. When you hire a concrete company it is very good if you get referrals. You need to be diligent in making sure you get at least a 4 inch pour. Most of the company's will chaulk around the edges of the basement so they can see where to pour to. If you pour with to much water you can have an evaporation problem and end up with quite a few cracks in the future after the warranty is over. In Michigan the state does not make a contractor warranty against cracking in the concrete until the crack reaches to big of a space. If the crack is very high in terms of distance top to bottom and you could stub your toe or trip than there is normally some sort of recourse. But under normal circumstances you better find a concrete company that is diligent in their approach and has satisfied clients. Lots of concrete people out there but I have my concrete company come all the way from the east side of Detroit because I trust him and have been using him for years. The concrete suppliers will normally be able to get you a concrete company list. Another thing about concrete. You cannot transport it for great distances. So try and find a concrete company that is within a 15 or 20 mile radius. There are certain ways to mix concrete. You can call out a 5 bag mix, a 6 bag mix, a certain slump (which refers to how much moisture is in the concrete), a pea gravel mix, (which is special for the styrofoam basements. Anyways, you get the idea. There are a lot of things to understand about concrete. There are suppliers who put additives in the concrete and it helps it dry better but the additive needs to be correct. I am not fond of the additive concrete mixes unless they tell me what's going in first. Hey, here is a nice trick. The next morning after you have poured a sidewalk and driveway, get your water hose out and hose down the concrete with a normal hard spay hose nozzle. Not a lot of pressure but enough pressure where you could spray off some leaves if there were leaves on your driveway. Take your time and spray it down from the top to the bottom and you will get a lot of the chemicals out and your concrete will turn very whitish in color. Sort of like taking the grey out.
