Before you shingle your house make sure you paint the exterior. (Reference to top picture). If you do not paint before shingles than the painter has to come back and paint the exterior by hand. Painting by hand costs you more money. There are basically three ways that painters paint the exterior.

They spray only
They spray and back roll
They hand paint

The preferred paint in the Michigan area for the painters is Sherwin Williiams. The choices of paint for the exterior as I see it are;

Latex paint
Oil base paint (We use for winter painting but unless you use two coats you will only get 1 to 3 years of coverage before you have to repaint.
I prefer this 3rd one. We use a product called Woodscapes and its 100 percent acrylic. It can be purchased at Sherwin Williams. The temperature has to be above 35 degrees and it will last 6 to 7 years before you have to repaint.

Paint is such an important trade. Your painter can either make you or break you. Think of it like this. If you have a great painter he can make a so so built house look pretty good. If you have a not so great a painter he can make a wonderfully built house look terrible. Take your pick.

Prime before you trim because if you don�t, you will end up with no prime behind your cabinets, window casings, and door casings. We also use colored tints in our primer.

The interior paint of the house is most important. Our process goes like this:

We prime with Sherwin Williams tinted primer.
We than use a minimum grade 200 series Sherwin Williams paint.
You can use a flat paint, a low sheen paint, a satin paint or a simi- gloss. On our custom homes we use a satin finish.
The interior woodwork needs to be caulked and puttied 1st. Than we use 2 coats of primer than we use 2 coats of paint. No one has better looking paint and drywall than we do.
You can upgrade from the process above but our customers have been very satisfied with this process. Plus its an affordable way to get an excellent product.
